Core Competencies Sdn. Bhd. (CCSB) in collaboration with technology partners, the Malaysian Institute for Nuclear Technology Research (MINT) and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) has been working closely to develop the RDF Research Centre (RDF RC). Among the research activities that have been conducted are as follows:
• Study on Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Generation and Composition at Kuala Lumpur transfer station, Kajang and Ampang Jaya.
• Performance of RDF Plant and emission monitoring.
• Development of RDF Pellets for Industrial / Commercial usage.
• Development of a Knowledge-Based Life Cycle Assessment of MSW Management and Recycling System in Malaysia.
• RDF Research Centre
In 2001, CCSB has completed Malaysia’s first Refuse Derive Fuels pilot plant in Semenyih, Selangor. This plant is located in Kajang, Selangor and can handle 15 tons of Solid Waste a day. The plant is locally fabricated in Malaysia and unique in South East Asia.
Detailed research on waste characteristics, further technological and engineering advancement are being undertaken in this plant to ensure a breakthrough in the process development, methods and approach of providing an Integrated Solid Waste Management System for Malaysia.
• Power Generation
Through the R&D activities that are taking place in our RDF Research Centre, we have managed to improve the heating value of RDF. We are currently conducting further studies on blending techniques to further improve the calorific value (CV) of RDF. By improving the CV of RDF, we would be able to produce more power from the power plant and reduce the generation cost.
• Associate Companies
• Technology & Research Collaborators
• Malaysian Institute for Nuclear Technology Research (MINT)
Core Competencies Sdn Bhd has appointed MINT as a technology collaborator and has embarked on numerous research and development activities in the field of Waste and Incineration. These projects are both self funded by CCSB and also by grants awarded by Malaysian Technology Development Corporation and Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment.
MINT is an R&D organisation, established with the onus of introducing and promoting the use of nuclear science and technology in national development. Nuclear science technology finds its application in vast areas of activities of Man and His Environment.
From initial efforts which were singularly concentrated on the development of human capital base and physical infrastructure in the first wave of evolution (1971-1982), to the establishment and consolidation of research areas and programs in the second wave (1983-1993). MINT is now an established R&D organisation with a diversified technology base, serving the needs of a wide range of socio-economic sectors through its multi-sectoral market connection
• Bangalore Blended Fuels Pte. Ltd. (BBF)
BBF is a private company based in Bangalore, India. Led by its managing director, K.S Sivaprasad, BBF developed a technology, which transforms MSW into RDF – an energy resource.
K.S Sivaprasad was instrumental in conceiving and developing a plant in Bangalore, India for processing MSW to produce clean burning fuel by constructing various equipment for segregating all kinds of non-combustibles and consolidating the combustibles in a form of fuel. BBF is the advisor to CCSB in terms of technology transfer and other advice relating to construction of the RDF plant and power plant.
• Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM)
UPM established its Department of Environmental Sciences in 1976 and has academic staff with a wide range of interests such as environmental policy & administration, coastal zone management, air pollution and impact on vegetation, water and waste-water quality treatment, solid waste management, ecophysiology, epidemiology, marine water quality and hydrology. Apart from offering academic degrees, the Department also provides general consultancy services and professional environmental services to governmental bodies as well as private companies.
Some of the scope of services offered by UPM are:
• Environmental impact assessment
• Environmental planning
• Solid Waste Management
• Transport Planning
The Department of Environmental Sciences in UPM will provide consultation services in respect of EIA, site studies, MSW composition analysis and environmental management (EMS) including the ISO 14001 & ISO 9001 standard. The pilot plants will be used by UPM researches and students for environmental studies relating to MSW, renewable energy, or any other studies that may be deemed suitable for UPM.
